Smerle's Innistrad Draft #1

(Smerle joins the fray!!)

Was itching to get my Innistrad draft on, so tried out a pre-release draft.  I feel like I made the right picks for the most part, but the plan didn't quite come to fruition during the matches.  Gutter Grime never arrived and I had to use lots of early creatures to fend off aggro early on, which meant losing fuel for the ooze fire.  I still like the thought of this deck, but seems maybe too cute to compete in a format that still seems quite aggressive.  May be better paired with Blue with some card drawing and control.

Went 1-2, the Darkthicket Wolf  + Festerhide Boar winning me the one match.  But when you don't get Grime, Lumberknot, or Moldgraff to the table . . . you lose.  Would still like to play a draft deck match sometime with this and see if it could work.

  1. see I think you made a mistake on the first pick, Instigater gang over gutter grime I think

  2. P1P1: INSTIGATOR GANG! It's such a ridiculous card! Pick it pick it pick it! Remember, There can be two rares in Innistrad :)

P1P2: After the first pick, the Outcasts is the pick here, definitely.

P1P3: Powerful guy! I wonder if the Warden is better, but I think staying on colour is good here.

P1P5: Creeping Renaissance is firstpickworthy! Take it :)

    P1P6: Another Outcasts? Sweet!

P1P9: I think I like the Spirit better here, but both are solid...

P1P10: Nice - but I still think the Outcasts is the pick here.

P2P1: I think the pick here is between Festerhide and Devils, to be honest. Probably Boar.

    P2P2: I dunno... There's a Spirit, too...

P2P3: Lots of choices. Viper seems fine, I think...

P2P5: I might've considered a second Pilgrim here to accelerate, since I've been weighing high-cost guys so far...

P2P6: Another Spirit is my pick here, I think.

P3P2: Fine pick, but the Warden would be fine too. Especially if you had all those Orchard Spirits...

P3P5: The right pick, even if there's a FOURTH Orchard Spirit in there...

P3P8: The Heroism seems to be the pick here. What tokens are you playing?

  3. You guys are totally right. I think I completely assumed Instigator was a common without looking at it because I saw the Rare and forgot there could be two of them!

    Lesson Learned!

  4. How often did you get to morbid the Boar? In my first draft I had it played against me about four times, and not once was it a 5/5. I'm just wondering if that is typical?

I think there might have been a pretty good werewolf deck in here, if you had have started with the Instigator Gang and then taken green cards for the first 8-9 picks, but possibly it would have been too heavy on the five drops (with three Outcasts).

  5. Oh wait, only two Outcasts; the third was just the first one that tabled.

  6. I got it enabled a couple times, but not sure yet how effective it is.

Are the Outcasts relevant in draft? I've yet to see them on the board, so was wondering if were a factor. Think that's why I didn't grab any. In fact, I've yet to even attempt a werewolf draft deck. Always wait for the Reckless Wait to jump in.

  7. I haven't looked at the draft portion but looking at your pool I would definitely cut intangible virtue and one of the spidery grasps for the silver inlaid dagger and the woodland sleuth. The virtue ONLY pumps gutter grime tokens, which are don't need the extra boost. The dagger is going to make your double prey upon a LOT better - and I feel that it is a very solid equipment.

  8. P1P1 – Definitely Instigator Gang here. That card is just sick.

P1P2 – I would pick the Grasp here, though Lantern Spirit is pretty solid.

P1P5 – Creeping Renaissance is one of the few cards that I haven’t seen much in actual game play, but the one time I did see it, it won the game… I think a Morbid Plunder +1 for 5 is still good, especially when you can flash it back.

P1P6 – Ummm. Outcasts? Definitely better than a do nothing land.

P1P9 – Lumberknot has a lot of potential, but I would just pick the Orchard Spirit here.

P1P10 – This is a close pick, but I think you chose right, simply because green already has enough expensive cards.

P2P3- I definitely take the Prey Upon since you aren’t looking to go white at this point, but you could make a case for Travel Preparations. Viper is fine and all, but Prey Upon is much better. Oh yeah, and also Geist Catcher’s Rig. Hmmm. I think I take the Prey Upon still, but that is close.

P2P5 – I like Smite the Monstrous more than most, but Avacyn’s Pilgrim is just clearly the pick here.

    P2P7 – That’s kind of a late Travel Preparations.

P2P8 – Definitely the Hollowhenge Scavenger. Both like things that die, but one is actually something you want to actively play.

P2P9 – I take the Caravan Vigil here, since it allows you to splash fairly easily.

P3P8 – This card is not good. Village Bell-Ringer, however, is very good.

As for deckbuilding, Ditch the Intangible Virtue and a Spidery Grasp for Woodland Sleuth and Dagger.

Heheh. Just noticed that numotthenummy said the same thing.

  9. P1P1 - I take the Instigator Gang over the Gutter Grime.
P1P5 - I feel like Creeping Renaissance is good here, especially since you're hoping to trade guys off early for your festerhide boar. To me it seems much better than the scarecrow.
P1P6 - I'm not sure what the pick is here but it's definitely not ghost quarter. Typhoid rats and Markov Patrician both seem entirely reasonable to be picking up 6th. Other than that I like the big werewolf that becomes bigger (grizzled outcasts). Yeah your 5 drop spot is getting a little heavy already but you do have the pilgrim to help ramp.
P1P8 - This guy really helps you enable the morbid :). But it it is worth noting that there are 2 decent to good white cards in the pack.
P1P9 - And good synergy with the Stitcher's Apprentice.
P2P4 - I take another Stitcher's Apprentice. This guy is a lot harder to get going than it seems.
P2P5 - I'm really uncertain whether smite the monstrous is the pick here and whether it's worth splashing. Maybe the format will turn out that it's really good, but it's not doomblade...
P2P8 - Again I'm not sure why we're moving into white here, but I guess I did mention that it was gonna be open from the other direction too.
P3P2 - I would take the early drop werewolf here.
P3P3 - Selhoff Occultist seems fine and you need the early drops.
P3P8 - BELL RINGER!! That guy is so good.
