Lobster667's INN Draft #2

I was really happy about the deck, even if it kind of lacks bombs and there were a few doubtful inclusions (I feel like the Cobbled Wings are justified, but not everyone might agree). Unfortunately, I ended up going 1-2 after trouncing my opponent in the first match twice with Undead Alchemist + Nephalia Drownyard for insane milling and spawning, basically seeing his whole deck in the process in game one.

In the second match, I played against a pretty aggressive W/G deck, and I was just barely winning a really exciting game one when he played Garruk, which was enough to turn the tide. In game two I boarded in my Night Terrors and the counterspell, but had to mull to five and was mana-screwed (but with the counterspell in hand) when he played Garruk turn four, and I was just overwhelmed after that.

The third match was against White/Red aggro with Charmbreaker Devils plus Brimstone Volley and Nightbird's Clutches. Those games were pretty harsh, and, I am afraid to admit, pretty short.

  1. P1P1 – I take Skirsdage Cultist here, though you could consider the Chapel Geist. The Drownyard is alright, but not first pick worthy. Overall, I’d say this is a pretty strong pack, Geist, Cultist, Watchkeep, Travel Preparations, Silent Departure, and Ghoul Raiser, all of which are stronger than the land.

P1P4 – I don’t get why you don’t take the Bell-Ringer. Think Twice is alright, but it is really just a filler card, while Bell-Ring is rock solid. You can definitely be BW at this point, or either UWb or UBw, all of which are strong color combinations.

P1P5 – Grasp is stronger than Heron. Sure, Heron is pretty good, but Grasp is as good as top tier removal.

P1P9 – I would take the Dissipate here.

P1P13 – Maw is actually much better than the Chime. The Maw can kill those pesky rare lands.
P2P1 – Screeching Bat is better than this guy, but I suppose that he makes your Drownyard playable.

P2P3- Here, I take the Dead Weight.

P2P5 – I disagree that Abattoir Ghoul is the nuts, but he is definitely one of the better black creatures. (Which isn’t saying much).

P2P6 – Goliath, for sure. That guy is basically a dragon.

P2P7 – This draft is really schizoid. What colors are you even trying to draft? It seems like Ghoulraiser is the clear pick here.

P2P9 – Sensory Deprivation is good. Moment of Heroism is also pretty good, but aren’t you UB? Or did you switch to white when I wasn’t looking?

P2P12 – See. This is why you don’t take Think Twice pick 4.

P3P1 – Morkrut Banshee is definitely the best card. It kills things.

P3P2 – Okay, so you are white. I guess. I mean, I don’t really get it. You had so many chances at good black. In any case, this should be the Chapel Geist.

P3P6 – Again, this should be Chapel Geist or Grasp of Phantoms. You took the third best card for your deck.

P3P7 – Thraben Sentry. You need some good cards to make your deck decent at this point.

You don’t have much removal and you have lots of spells that don’t affect the board. I think that you couldn’t quite figure out what colors you were playing, and so you kept vacillating between black and white. Focusing on either would have made a good deck.

  2. I guess you're right in what seems to be the major point in most of the comments; Dedicating to a second colour was really hard for me here... I disagree with a few of your comments, especially on the third pack, but I still like your insight.

On P2P7: At this point, I have only 5 Black cards (of which not all are even playable) - 1BB seems like a really, really bad idea to me. I agree that the Griffin might just be bad enough that I want the Ghoulraiser anyway, but it's not a clear choice by any measure, to me.

On P3P7: What? I like the Sentry a lot but by this point I already had more than 23 playables. Adding another 4-drop durdle in my off-colour seems pretty bad.

On Grasp of Phantoms: I think you're overrating this card slightly. It's very rarely going to be flashbacked (when it is, it's nice, though), and the effect is a 1-for-1 with a nice tempo swing, but it's not (permanent) removal.

  3. P1P1 - I take the Chapel Geist here
P1P2 - I take the Avacynian Priest. I think I still take it even if I first picked the land. What's really interesting is the Priest vs. the Bonds of Faith, I think.
P1P4 - Village Bell Ringer! Think Twice is going down in my estimation.
P1P5 - I know it feels weird, but I'm trusting Oraymw here that Grasp of Phantoms is the pick here. The fact that it removes a draw step is so super critical and easy to overlook.
P1P7 - Makeshift Mauler vs. Geistcatchers rig is very interesting. I think I take the rig, but maybe I'm overvaluing it?
P1P8 - I take the Travel Preperations here. You still could open some green bomb. I doubt you play it, but I really don't wanna play cobbled wings either.
P2P2 - I guess I take the Diregraf Ghoul here and start valuing zombies higher, but maybe I'm CRAZY for that.
P2P3 - I take the dead weight here.
P2P5 - CORPSE LUNGE is also there. I'm not saying it's the pick. I think it's very close especially with how much stuff will be in your yard, but it's there.
P2P6 - I take the Skaab Goliath, but what do I know?
P2P7 - Really? I don't have your picks in front of me like you did, but you don't wanna play ghoulraiser on turn 3 anyway. I think with all your zombies he's the pick!
P2P8 - Did you see LSV's sealed vid where curiosity was insane? Granted, you don't have as many fliers as he did... but, yeah Flail makes me happy when opponents play it.
P3P1 - Take the Morkrut Banshee.
P3P6 - Or the Grasp of the Phantoms
P3P7 - I'd take the Thraben Sentry. Do you really play 2 Traveler's Amulet?

  4. I'm slowly coming around on Grasp, and I've seen LSV just abuse Curiosity, yes, though after this draft :) Looking forward to doing another one!
