Asturiel's ISD Draft #3

The mana was a bit light, I'm not used to going 16 but I felt like in this deck it was justified. The curve topped at 5 aside from Flashback cards and I couldn't cut another spell for the life of me :) I decided to go with the 2nd rites in the board since I couldn't get myself to cut another creature since I was light on those, and I couldn't see a spell to cut. Maybe the cleaver was the call to cut, but I felt it was quite necessary in the deck. The scarecrow also got the axe since I didn't have any "bombs" to stall to so I needed guys who could turn sideways more than guys to stop them from turning sideways. Le sigh, I don't know. Anyway the deck durdled very well, and when it died while durdling it didn't, but if you let me durdle around, I ground ya out :P

Went 2-1 losing in the finals to a GW travel prep deck. He didn't let me durdle :(

  1. P1P1: Eek, this is really close! I could see picking the Volley since it IS the only Red card in the pack while there are several okay-ish Whites, but perhaps going for raw power is good. I'd be thinking for abit on this pick!

P1P2: I like this pick a lot. You can cut Blue here, probably.

P1P4: I think this is a fine pick but perhaps the White trick is better...?

P1P5: Perhaps your pick is right here but I found myself considering the Feeling of Dread, here...

P1P6: Drake is definitely better than Alchemy when you haven't taken any Black.

P1P7: I take the Assistant here, I think. I don't think it's worth moving into Black and the Dead Weight might be a "fluke" signal.

P1P10: I think I'd take the Spare from Evil here.

P2P1: I like the Lantern Spirit better, here.

P2P3: I don't HATE the pick, but I think you should've gone with the Skaab.

P2P6: I think Black should be your Splash, not White, but I've made quite a lot of different picks than you here...

P2P9: Nice! On the Crossway; Red has been pretty open as far as I can tell and she is hard on the mana...

P2P12: You want another Witch, here.

P2P13: Maybe Maw for the sideboard? It probably doesn't matter.

P3P1: The pick here is between Rites, Scholar and Gallows Warden, in my opinion. I don't think your black is deep enough to safely run Victim. I think I'd take the Rites with your picks, the Warden if you had sticked more to White.

P3P9: Okay, WHAT IS HAPPENING!? How can people not know this card is good?! Someone took CURSE OF THE PIERCED HEART over it?!

Deck; I think I cut Cleaver for the second Rites.

  2. P1P4: I value being more open with the cleaver higher than taking a combat trick which should be available to me later in the pack if that's the colour to be in.

P1P7: Quality removal in a color at the end of a pack seems like a signal to me. Plus it was the first time Id seen a non blue card of significant value in this pack so I thought of it as a signal and considering that I had seen no white other than my first 3 picks, I was ready to let it go.

P1P10: I haven't been impressed with the Spare from Evil, plus I've already put a down payment on the ring for blue, and I've just been flirting with white if you get what I mean :P

P2P1: I haven't been that impressed with Lantern Spirit, it't not that he's bad, it's just the fact that I don't see him as a first pick. Plus Removal is removal, which is removal, which is removal.

P2P3: I think I should have gone with the Skaab too but I think its mighty close.

P2P6: I find that hard to take considering I've seen two good white cards out of two packs so far and I've seen a fair amount of decent black so I think your assessment here is off.

P2P12: Yeah your probably right, I just didn't want to give the decks that WRECK me even more stuff ya know?

P3P1: If I was more white I would have gone with the Warden, but like I said, at that point I had the Dragon and the Bonds while I had a bunch of decent black. I feel I could have run the victim with the pool that I had, although I don't hate my pick of the Scholar here, plus it doesn't help I don't have any big finishers yet...

P3P9: Yeah I don't claim to understand why it happened, I just took it :P

Here's the think about the Clever vs the Rites. I had a total of two big dudes in my pile, the two Monstrosities, everybody else was a Weenie of some variety. I felt in order to actually make decent creatures I NEEDED a way to turn them into viable dudes, if I had a Skaab Goliath of some other fattie I would see the rites, but with the dudes I had I couldn't justify it.

  3. P1P7 - I slam the deranged assistant here. That guy is awesome and one of the only ways to get a turn 3 stitched drake.
P1P9 - I don't love the flail but if it's ever good it's in the skies deck... which just so happens to be UW. I'd take it here. Cutting be damned.
P2P2 - I probably take the brimstone volley here. It's just too good.
P2P3 - I certainly don't like this pick, but that's just me. I take the enabler and I'm happy.
P2P6 - alright, I concede that you may have read these signals better than I.
    P3P1 - I don't hate this pick.
P3P8 - I still take the deranged assistant here.

Deckbuilding - I dunno if I like the rites sitting in the board here, but what do I know? I might play it over think twice : - x.
