Yablo's DII Draft #1

Here's my most recent draft:  http://www.raredraft.com/watch?d=34fuj

Ended up going 1-2.  It was a quick deck but light on creatures.  I started my DKA pack thinking I was going to be RG but once I got to the INN packs I switched to RB.  This sort of screwed me when it came to # of creatures.

Undying Evil saved my butt several times and those Hounds just create terrible match ups for villain.  Sadly I got stuck on 2 mana a couple games which lead to losses.  Those games I did get my mana drops I ended up either winning or losing with villain only having >5 life left.

As always any critique would be appreciated.  I think I need to know when to set my colors sooner.

  1. P1P3 - You can't retrospect pick the ghoul because of the colors you ended up in... that's being ROTty :). I would take the eyeball jar here.
P1P4 - Quiver isn't a bad pickup here, but I might be taking the seakite. I might like that guy too much right now.
P1P6 - Don't hate the burden pickup here.
P1P9 - the Screeching Skaab isn't garbage, so I take him here.
P1P12 - I take the altar of the lost.
P1P13 - Deadly Allure is playable, I take that.
P2P1 - I already have some blue cards in my pile, so I slam the murder (or the claustrophobia and be happy about it. Given your pile, though this is probably right.
P2P2 - I actually probably take fiend hunter here...
P2P4 - No, the dead weight is the right pick and a nice reward for picking up the noble.
P2P5 - I think Dead Weight is better than geistflame, but not by much.
    P2P6 - I like Rats over Pariah.
P2P7 - Nothing here? What about the amulet to splash your W?
P2P9 - the claustrophobia wheeling shows how awesome MY deck would have been B-).
P2P13 - You totally picked up a sac outlet! Altar's reap is one!!
P3P5 - Don't forget that Banshee is absolutely bananas with Undying Evil.

  2. P1P1: I like the Blademaster here as well, I think the only card that competes here is the Collar since it is color-less (no pun intended).

P1P2: I'm fine with this pick although Tower Geist might be slightly better.

P1P3: As Zach said, don't say "I should've picked this-and-that since I ended in that color". And the pick here is between Jar (my pick) and Hermit or Devil for a fast beater.

P1P4: I think the quiver is pretty good, probably the right pick here.

P1P5: I think I like the Elk better since you have the Geist.

P1P6: I like Burden here, personally.

P1P7: More results-oriented thinking! The Bear is better.

P1P8: Russet Wolves are surprisingly good. I don't see a reason to move into black here.

    P1P13: Allure!

    P2P6: Rats!

P3P1: Yeah, the cultist is the pick here!

P3P3: Shepherd is a better hate pick and easier to play.

P3P4: Slayer is so good. Don't you want to spash White?

P3P5: Banshee, probably. I don't hate the ghoul though.

P3P6: Man Green beats would be awesome. Wolf!

P3P8: Again, you can't judge this pick like that. The real reason you should'be taken the pig is because you probably should've been in green-something.

  3. P1P1 – Blademaster is probably the strongest card in the pack, but my main worry about it is getting sucked into red. It isn’t a strong enough card to make you want to stay in red without some other strong cards.

P1P2 – Of course, Burning Oil is a legit reason to be in red. I’d still be looking for like a Fires of Undeath, or something like that, before I started actively going after red.

P1P3 – Actually, I take the Jar of Eyeballs here. It is a fairly strong card that can give an aggro deck some leverage in the late game, and it’s colorless, which is pretty valuable for you at this point. But Geist is fine. If not the Geist, then probably Fling.

P1P4 – Definitely take the Quiver.

P1P5 – This card is fine, but there are plenty of times when it is just a very expensive Prey Upon. I’m worried that there isn’t enough quality red coming around to you.

P1P6 – I’d definitely take the Burden of Guilt. At this point, I’d be solidly RW.

P1P7 – With what you’ve gotten, the Bear is definitely the best pick.

P1P8 – I don’t think this is a time to branch out into black. I’d take the Russet Wolves. Undying Evil is pretty strong, but Russet Wolves is also useful since RW has so few 4 drops.

P2P1 – Ugh. What a bad pack for you. I’d take the Cloistered Youth here.

P2P2 – Here, I’d take the Fiend Hunter. There is a really strong RW deck in here.

P2P5 – You are clearly RB here, so the Dead Weight is a good choice. But if you were RW, you’d still have pretty strong choices in the Rig, Geistflame, or Rolling Temblor.

P2P6 – I’m so sad you moved in black! Rally the Peasants is so good in RW.

P2P7 – A Chapel Geist too. I’d have taken the Sulfur Falls with the RB deck that you’ve got right now.

P2P8 – Another Rally comes around. RW would have been amazing.

P2P9 – You need the vampire, but that Shimmering Grotto looks nice.

P3P3 – If I were RW, I’d take the Township and splash some green. It gives you a decent reason to play 18 lands.

P3P4 – Again, RW would have loved that Slayer of the Wicked.

P3P8 – If you’re going to hate draft, then take the Murder of Crows.

I don’t know if you realized it, but you were really fighting for black with the person to your right. You were probably fighting for red as well. The RW deck can be really good, but it seems like you had your mind set on RB or RG with a white splash from the beginning. But the best deck was definitely the RW one.
