Zvazda's M12 Draft #13

Be warned that this draft was unlucky 13 and the MTGO client crashed halfway through R1.  I wasn't able to restart in time so we never got to see how this deck piloted.  If that bothers you... don't watch this draft.

I don't think there were too many decisions here, but feel free to let prove me wrong in the comments.

Listen along with Zach

We only got one album in because of the shortened draft time
Marc Cohn's Listening Booth 1970.  Which is a collection of Marc Cohn's favorite songs from 1970 when he was growing up.  I hadn't listened to this album before and found it to be quite a treat.

  1. P1P1: Uuuugh a pick. That is hard!
I might've picked the Sengir because I like Black better than White but it really is close. I see the argument for both, certainly (and maybe Looter, too).

P1P2: Here, I would take Pegasus. You basically just pushed one of the people down the line into Blue (possibly more than one) and you have a White card that you want to play. If I had taken the Sengir, Thirst would probably be the pick here.

    P1P3: Oh yeah, Pacifism!

    P1P4: It's not that I don't like Peregrine - I just like Arbalest a little better; I would've picked the uncommon here.

P1P5: What. Is. Going. On. Only one uncommon missing and two really good commons still in place? I slam the Pegasus here, definitely.

P1P6: Closer than last time, but I still think I like the Arbalest here. Not sure, though...

P1P7: That is just weird! But I've noticed Crimson Mage goes really late, and I don't consider it a signal, so I think you're right in taking the Gravedigger here, even if you've passed a few solid Black cards earlier.

P1P8: Hmmmm. The Dragon is probably the right pick but I just like the Colossus here? Like, we could keep W/B open and it has a really cute interaction with Gravedigger?

P1P9: Time Reversal is actually okay in WU tempo, I think. It would also be okay with the Arbalests since you can have the ground locked down and go long game.
That said, I take the Mind Rot here. I really like Black. Scepter is always good, too.

P1P10: Rusted Sentinel is not bad in Blue, but it's not quite good compared to White creatures. Still, it's my pick here, it's a fine ground-clogger for the Wings deck.

P1P11: Boar and Levitation are both pretty marginal. So far, you don't have a lot of fliers, and if you end in heavy-White with like Benalish Veterans and Arbalests, Levitation might even be playable.
Sanctuary is not good unless you play Manabarbs :)

P1P12: I take the Tectonic Rift here, it is playable in Red aggro strategies and you don't want to face it. Angel's Mercy is a non-card.

P1P13: Same for Visage: It can actually be played against you to an effect.

P2P1: Why not? Peace out, man.

P2P2: Stave Off is the right pick in my opinion. It is so useful!

P2P3: Yay and then wheel the Pledge for Mono-White shenanigans!

P2P4: I don't know how many Blue cards you have yet but I think the Vampire is a good pick here. Unsummon is also fine.

    P2P5: Lol.

P2P6: You have A LOT of 2-drops already. Then again, you do need dudes (and with the removal you've got, this guy might be a Lava Axe on legs).

P2P7: The heavy blue annoys me but the Adept is ridiculously good and should NOT go 7th. You need to decide whether you're Black or Blue here, and you pick Blue, it seems.

P2P8: Triple Pacifism seems a decent justification for this pick :)

    P2P9: Om Nom Nom!

    P2P10: Nice hatepick!

    P2P11: See P2P3 ;)

P2P12: Another Pledge! That's my pick here, Elixir is unplayable...

  2. P3P1: Mmmmhm! Good with Auramancer if you've lost your Pacifisms. Not too many interesting creatures otherwise...

P3P2: Twodrop.dek! Stormfront is the pick here.

P3P3: The pick here for me is between Auramancer and Breath, and I probably still take the Breath. If you had had my picks so far, though, I think I'm taking Auramancer and try to go almost-mono White and play both Guardians' Pledges.

P3P4: Ooomph! That would've knocked the bottom out of the mono-white ambition anyway. Aether Adepts are always welcome!

P3P5: The Horse is kind of awkward here with the Adepts, but it might still be the pick. Otherwise, Ponder > Merfolk number 2. Or Cutthroat, you have so many 2-drops!

P3P6: Sure. But mono-White would've been so awesome here, with three Pledges :)

P3P7: Geeeh this guy seems underwhelming. The combo with the Dragon is cute, but he is a hard-to-cast Runeclaw Bear! I think I take the Colossus, you're lacking a bit in win conditions.

P3P8: What. Azure Mage and Drake Pick Eight??
The Drake is the right pick here, I think. Perhaps the Mage if you had the Arbalests since they combo nicely.

P3P9: You're heavy enough in Blue to play this, so fine. The Leap is an okay trick but I agree on this pick (as I said, you need finishers).

P3P10: Ice Cage is fine to pass if you have triple Pacifism. I guess it interacts fine with the Auramancer though.

P3P12: Demystify is the pick here, for the board. You're never playing the Erasure but you might need the Aurahoser.

P3P13: So much better with double Arbalest! Don't know if I pick that or hate the Tectonic, to be honest...

DECK: Didn't you have a Stave Off? Why are you not playing Stave Off?

  3. Lobster, towards the end of packs I've been leaning more towards taking even non-cards late in packs if they are on color and it's the first or second pack. I just like sending that signal. Obviously I take cards that can be annoying first, but I don't really think Tec Rift is a card like that. I agree on the visage, though.

Elixir is unplayable... unless you happen to run into the mill deck, then I think it's a fine sideboard card. But if I'm being honest I never pick this if I'm not trying to redeem.

I dunno that I love the idea of trying to go Monowhite when I have cards with the power level of looter and the adept. Those are cards that make me WANT to play blue rather than look for an excuse to play a mono-colored deck. Maybe I'm too drawn to power-level here?

Yeah, and now I even remember thinking in deck building, where is my stave off? It was one of those weird things where it didn't end up in my pile. Does that ever happen to you?

I've never had tec rift played against me so I've never been hurt by it. Have you?

  4. That's all fine, but Tectonic Rift is not just annoying, it can win games. It basically says "Creatures are unblockable this turn".

Elixir is conceivably sideboardable against mill decks, true.

On Monowhite: With three Pledges, the Throne, and a pretty strong white creaturebase, I would be looking to see if I can play mono. There is nothing wrong in deciding that's not what you want (or think you can) and your Blue cards are certainly pretty powerful (at least the ones you mentioned).

I see only 42 cards on your picture of deckbuilding... Could you have somehow "hidden" it? You picked it P2P2.

I don't recall having faced Tectonic Rift (luckily) but then again you only really see it when it ends games. I could have played someone who had it for all I know.
