Smerle's 8/30 #1 M12 Draft

Went 2-1 with this one today, falling to a Garruk combined with unlucky draw (creatures were bottom decked).  Really nice curve here as I normally had something playable each turn, be it removal or a tough dude.  I even got a token on Sengir!  Seems like I made the right picks, just tough luck against Garruk.  Also think making that Serra pick was still the right thing to do, as the white flyers didn't have much to compete with.

So last two drafts I'm 5-1, feeling much better after a bad tilt streak.  LR is making me a better drafter for sure!!

  1. P1P2 - Gravedigger versus outrage is a really tough pick after first picking a vampire. If it were incinerate it would be a little easier, but the outrage is not splashable, so I might pick the gravedigger even though it's only 2nd pick.

P1P6 - I take the bonebreaker here. I look for reasons not to play enchantments rather than reasons to play enchantments so I find the golem has always sat in my board. You're already looking pretty seriously at two colors so you will probably not be hurting for playables, therefore not playing the golem.

P1P10 - because you took the golem the favor might be the pick. I probably take the crown of empires, but it doesn't really slot into the RB aggro deck so that might be the wrong pick.

P2P1 - I take the outrage here because removal > creatures, but I'm not sure about this. Would love if other people weigh in on this? (my thinking also is that the outrage will always kill something whereas occasionally the Minotaurs will sit in your hand not being bloodthirsted or come down as a grey ogre. I'm not really committed to this line of thinking, though.)

P2P7 - As evidenced by my other drafts I am down on the shade, but I take the Alabaster mage here.

P3P2 - Wow. Fireball and Royal Assassin. Sick pick.

P3P8 - See... this is why I would have taken the Bonebreaker so I don't get tricked into not taking the mage. Would much rather have 2 more creatures and bonebreaker than 2 dark favors and thran golem.

P3P9 - Hideous Visage over bonebreaker?

P3P13 - I probably hate the pride guardian here. There's a chance that he shuts down your early start (not a great one, a lot of your stuff doesn't care about him) but you're definitely not playing firebreathing.

We've been over this... but for me in deckbuilding: I would take out the golem and double dark favor, for Piker, Slaughter cry and another drifting shade. Also, was 6 mountains enough to consistently hit fireslinger or turn 4 minotaurs?

  2. Yeah, I seemed to have zoned in on Thran when maybe Bonebreaker was better for a faster deck I was heading towards. I'll remember that tip.

6 was good enough. I think I only mull'd once (one Swamp, all creatures) and I always had a Mountain in opening hand. Getting another by turn 4 wasn't a problem either.

  3. P1P2 I think I would have taken Gravedigger, and the one after that too. I also agree with zvazda that creatures such as Bonebreaker are often better than auras (then again, Dark Favor leans against a faster tactic than Bonebreaker Giant does).

I agree with picking the Minotaurs over the Outrage P2P1, though.
