Krbmeister's AVR Draft #1

Hey everyone! I'm pretty new to MTGO relatively new to drafting. I've been playing off and on since Scars but I've recently had the desire to really study the game and get better. Hopefully watching your drafts will help! After reading Oraymw's article, I went in wanting UG (view the draft here!). The cards I got certainly helped push me that way. I ended up with a deck that was certainly powerful but had it's holes (specifically at 2 cc). But I ended 2-1 including a second round bye.

If you're interested to see the draft in real time or watch the matches, I posted them on youtube. I really like all the videos on MTGOacademy.com and figure I can make similar videos, only theirs are typically much better. Especially since they don't use software that cuts out in the middle of matches. But if you're interested, I'd love to hear what you think of my deck and how I played it. Thanks!

  1. P1P1 – I have no experience with the Sage. I think it is probably the strongest card in the pack, especially since the format usually ends with cards in hand, and having a good accelerator is going to get all of those cards out of your hand and onto the field, while also enabling you to mess around with your curve a little more freely. Like the Borderland Ranger, it opens up a whole field of picks that you wouldn’t have been able to take otherwise.

P1P3 – This pick makes sense to me. I like Wurm a lot, but you don’t want more than a couple of creatures at the top of your curve. I’m not sure how good it is in comparison to the Vorstclaw… I think you take the Wurm earlier, to get another soulbonder for Lumberknot shenanigans.

P1P5 – This is a really good pick. I think some people might underestimate the Chill, but hitting something for 2 turns is often 25% of the game, and it is usually the 25% that actually matters, since the first 4 turns usually don’t matter too much.

    P1P6 – I like Spectral Prison a lot.

P1P8 – A nice late Wingcrafter. That guy’s text box might as well be half green.

P1P10 – I think the sideboard card is probably the best pick. I would have considered taking the Thatcher’s Revolt. I don’t know how you would use it, but you never know if you are going to get passed a sick pack of red cards.

P1P12 – Take the Winds!! I know it seems bad, but consider how easy it is to get a whole board of flying creatures when you have Wingcrafters in your deck. This guy changes them into 2/2s that also give other creatures Flying and +1/+1… I mean, that’s like turning all of your Wingcrafters into also being Trusted Forcemages. While it doesn’t fit in every deck, I think that it is a rock solid card.

P1P13 – I’d take the Brains, but these kind of discard effects typically carry some kind of marginal value on the secondary market, so it has less to do with the draft and more to do with monetary issues.

P2P1 – This is a tough pick. You are short on creatures, so the Fettergeist might be better… but Blessings is just so good. It’s better in this format than Travel Preparations was in Innistrad, but a big part of that is how easy it is to fit into any deck. And if you manage to cast it for 1 mana, then it is insane. With that said, 3/4 flyers for 3 are pretty nutty good.
P2P2 – I just take the rare. You probably don’t end up in Red, but this guy has a potential to be a key roleplayer in Constructed, so it might be worth a few ticks in November.

    P2P3 – Soooo gooood…

P2P6 – I think in a double Mist Raven deck, that this is generally better.

P2P11 – This card is actually pretty decent in the Loner deck… which you don’t want to be in, but it is decent in there.

P3P1 – Ugh… I still take the Vanishment. But I understand how it feels to be so short on creatures in this format. It always feels like you just aren’t getting creatures.

P3P3 – I think that the Trackers is the pick here. You don’t need to many decent sized creatures for it to be good, and you’ve got a few. If you don’t take that, I think Joint Assault is the card.

P3P7 – Okay… this is really weird. This card is just insane. What a sick pick up.

You have some very strong cards in your pool, but you also have to play some weak cards to make it work. I’m guessing that Blue and Green were being cut, though it is interesting that you were still able to make a playable deck. I’m not sure that you really could have done anything different. I think you probably could have picked up the second round win anyway. Deadeye Navigator is pretty insane, as is the Tracker. I haven’t looked at the videos on YouTube, but I think perhaps I will.

  2. Hey Thanks for the input! I'm glad you thought I did alright. I did get to pull off the deadeye/mist raven combo in M3G1 and dude quickly conceded.

What's your thought on P1P4 Latch Seeker vs. Gryff Vangard? They seem pretty similar.

    P1P8 Wingcrafter vs Elgaurd Shieldmate?

  3. P1P4 - Definitely the Latch Seeker. The format is fast enough that you really want to have those kinds of early plays, and its pretty sick if you can get Soulbonders with it.

P1P8 - Wingcrafter, for sure. It seems so innocuous, but it gets so much damage through. I'd first pick that card in a weak pack.

  4. P1P1: I don't have a problem with this pick, although I think if you were looking only at the card's utility in limited, Ranger beats Sage. But Sage is a rare and more splashy, and nothing here is vastly better than it.

P1P2: Lots of powerful cards here - Mist Raven's probably the right pick :)

P1P11: I'd take the Scrapper over the second Natural End, I think. It's fine with Wingcrafter or Geist Trappers.

P1P12: I'd hate the Winds before the Shield. You might even end up using it if you get more Wingcrafters/Mist Ravens and some Scrappy drakes.

P1P13: Definitely take the Braaaaaaains here.

P2P1: I actually far prefer the miracle to the Fettergeist here, good choice.

P3P1: I'd probably take the Vanishment even then, hoping to wheel the Escort (or, worst case, the Skaab).

P3P6: I take the Prison here, I think.

    P3P7: Whu-

    1. I think I convinced Marcus of the pure insanity of Deadeye Navigator, so it's no surprise that we are both shocked here. I mean, Marcus knew it was amazingly good before I said anything, but I pointed out that it is even better than that. You don't even need a Mist Raven for it to be awesome, but they are definitely one of the sicker combos.

  5. P1P1 - I take the ranger here.
P1P8 - I take the Shieldmate because of ol' latchy, but I like your guts.
P1P10 - I probably take thatcher revolt away from someone, but I don't hate this.
P1P11 - You don't need 2, so take the creature you can play in a suuuuper pinch.
P1P12 - I can't see using shield... so I'd take the winds as "signal". Don't think it matters, though.
P2P1 - I take the blessing here, but I don't have any experience with fetter.
    P3P1 - Vanishment!
    P3P6 - I take the Spectral Prison

    Really strong draft!
