Zvazda's AVR Draft #1

Here's my first AVR draft.  The first pack was a little weird with signals, I think because the power level wasn't there, but I'm interested to see if you think I missed anything.

Deckbuilding:

I should have played moonlight geist.  Probably over wingcrafter?

This deck 3-0'd pretty handily.  The highlight was getting my 3 Sanctifiers in my graveyard, getting them back with my angel... while having my nephalia smuggler on the field.  I got to keep blocking with my sanctifiers... then gain 9 life.

Lemme know where you think I messed everything up.

  1. P1P1 – For me, this is a tough pick between Blessings of Nature and Vanishment. I think that they are pretty close in power level, but Blessings may just be a little bit better. In any case, it is the pick here, because of the Misthollow Griffin, which should go third, and Peel from Reality which is pretty good as well.

P1P2 – I pick the Inifinite Reflection. It is probably a little bit better than Seraph overall, and it goes in the color that you are already in. But Seraph is also very strong. Much better than Amass the Components btw. I think of Infinite Reflection sort of along the lines of an easy to splash Overrun. With a little bit more downside, but potentially more upside.

P1P3 – With where you are in the draft so far, this is probably the best pick, but Blood Artist is the best card, followed closely by Kruin Striker and then Howlgeist.

P1P4 – Another Kruin Striker :( But Goldnight Commander is definitely the right card here.

P1P5 – They are right next to each other. I assume this was a misclick? There are arguments for both Angelic Wall and Gallows at Willow Hill, but I think I probably would have taken the Flicker.

P1P7 – Geist Snatch is fine in a tempo-y deck, but it’s definitely not right for you. I would have taken the Lancer though, since it is the better card.

P1P9 – I like Fleeting Distraction of Call to Serve much better here.

P1P11 – Vanguard’s Shield might be slightly more playable, but neither of those cards is very likely to make your deck.

P3P1 – Your picks all the way through Pack 2 were stellar. And then you get rewarded with a Riders of Gavony!!

P3P3 – I think that Crippling Chill is the right pick here. I’ve been very unimpressed with Righteous Blow.

Overall, this seems like a pretty solid draft. There are a few things I would have done differently in the first pack, but most weren’t that big of a deal.

I agree with putting in Moonlight Geist over the Wingcrafter. You don’t really have that much that you want to pair with the Wingcrafter. I would have played the Farbog Explorer over Cathedral Sanctifier. I think you actually prevent more damage overall with him than with the Sanctifier. And randomly you just win games with Swampwalk.

Congrats on the 3-0 though!! (And the 4-0 if you count beating me with it afterward).

  2. Alright I know this is probably not the kind of comment you're looking for on this site, but I gotta know: How do you get the Zendikar lands in your draft decks like that?

We appreciate all comments here. Thanks for stopping by.

In deckbuilding, save your deck out. Go to Deck Builder, Open the file, get your lands in, SAVE (not SAVE AS). Go back to Deckbuilding, OPEN, check to see that you have your awesome Zendy lands and submit.

  4. P1P1: This is really, really close. I like Griffin a little better than Blessings in the abstract, I think, but two of the three arguably best cards in the pack are blue, which might sway me to green.

P1P2: I like Reflection here, both because you stay on colour and because it's really, really good. Seraph is definitely better than Amass, though (in my opinion, Amass is not even that good).

P1P3: Harsh, but I like it fine enough. If you had sticked to Blue, I'd move in on the Artist here, but I love black.

P1P4: Seeing back-to-back Strikers sail by hurts! But Commander is the pick.

P1P5: I like the Wall here. Your current deck needs it.

P1P6: I like Wingcrafter better than Sanctifier in the abstract, but I'd probably take Sanctifier here since you are looking like an U/W skies deck that needs the early defense.

P1P7: Sadface, there are two good Black cards and a red one too... I think I take Connoisseur and keep Black as an option, but then again I love black.

P1P9: Already having one Connoisseur here would make this much easier.

P1sum-up: If any signals were passed, they were vaguely red and black, but that late Inquisitor makes me think White is fine too.

P2P1: This is really hard. I really like Black. What do you have keeping you in Blue?

P2P4: I think I like Defang better here, because your deck is a bit slow. Smuggler's okay too, I guess.

P2P5: I like Voice better than both. Much more if you had more early guys already...

P2P6: Nope. I like your pick.

P2P9: Wheeling the Shade! I need to shut up about black, don't I?

P2P12: Butcher Ghoul 12th? Jeez. Sanctifier obviously the pick though.

P2P13: Why not playing two? She's fine.

P3P2: I don't think it is, to be honest. Protector is pretty bad in slow decks.

P3P3: Hard choice! I think I like the Chill here.

    P3P5: I think so too.

On Deckbuilding: I think I'd cut Scrappy for the Explorer. Possibly cut Wingcrafter for the second Voice.
